Teaching Kids to Give Back for a Better Society | El Paso, Texas
Think with me, when is the last time you stopped what you were doing for a minute, and thought, really thought about the many things life has offered you and that you should be thankful for? Now, most of us don’t think about doing that, about taking a break just to breathe and say thank you to the universe. We’re too busy, too anxious, about the future, about the bills, about the kids, and we only see problems, issues to resolve.
And yet, we have so many things to be thankful for. Let’s be thankful because we were born during this great era where life is made easier for us, let’s be thankful for the food on our table, let’s be thankful for all those people working everyday to make our lives easier, without them, you wouldn’t be able to read this blog post online, or even enjoy those basic things that we take for granted, like running water, electricity, and hot showers.
It is primordial to teach our kids to be thankful, and to give back, and it is by doing it ourselves that they will learn. We all know it, kids learn first and foremost from their parents. They look up to them, because in their little minds, their parents are perfect human beings with no flaw. And that’s why it’s important to set the example. Always have a positive attitude in front of your kids and try seeing the good side in what happens to you, this will show them that there is always hope, even in the darkest places.
As someone who has been active in my community since age 17, through volunteer work, I feel a responsibility to teach my students about giving back.
A couple of years ago, I organized a food drive with my students to aid “The candlelighters of El Paso”, a non-profit organization that helps cancer patients. This desire to help others in my community has been present all these years.
We, as adults, must show our children that it is important to be thoughtful and think of others, to develop compassion, to be selfless, to put others' needs before our own, and to realize that we must use our blessings, talents and our time for the betterment of our community.
So, here are a few tips to teach your kids to give back:
Go together as a family to an animal shelter, a nursing home or a refugee shelter, and help around. This will show your kids that even the smallest gestures can have a positive impact on society.
Teach your children to donate. Explain to them that the old clothes and toys they’re not using anymore can make another kid’s day. Let them choose the toys and clothes they want to donate, they will feel happy about it and learn how good someone can feel after giving back to society.
Assign your kids simple chores. To be responsible adults and productive members of society, kids need to learn that there is more to life than just taking what you want. They have to give back too, to help, because it’s the right thing to do.
See, teaching kids to give back to the community isn’t a difficult task, really. When they see their parents thinking of people other than themselves, they learn that this is the right way to pursue life. Happiness is built by giving back and doing good deeds around you.
